Umi-Jigoku Hell #1

The "hells" (jigoku) of Beppu are eight spectacular hot springs for viewing rather than bathing. They are presented to visitors in a rather touristy fashion, which might not appeal to everybody. Six of the hells are located in the Kannawa district and two in the more remote Shibaseki district. The word Jigoku takes it's meaning "burning hell" from the ancient Buddhist sutras of the east.

Below Kayleigh and Ben just got their first Stamp for visiting Hell # 1.

So called because it resembles the sea, this 200 meter deep, cobalt blue pond of boiling water emerged 1200 years ago after a volcanic explosion.
